Keeping your dog happy on Bonfire night
October 27, 2022How to keep your dog happy and stop boredom
January 10, 2023If there’s anything your dog loves more than food, it’ll be playing games with you and the family. They love to be taught new tricks.
Normally at Halloween we’re the ones having all the fun while the dog just looks on. This year they’re going to love joining in with Tricks AND Treats. A doggie dream come true.
We’ve come up with some simple tricks to teach your dog, so much easier when you can reward them with our Doggie Dippers or Nibbly Bitz and they’ll catch on in no time.
TEACH THEM TO SPIN
A surprisingly easy one this, once they can sit, they can spin. It can be done in a day. While they’re sitting and looking at you expectantly, make a horizontal circle with your finger and say SPIN. Do this 3 or 4 times. Then, draw a treat around them in a circle from front to back. The first time they do it reward them with one of our wheat free Carob and Coconut biscuits. Repeat the command whenever you can throughout the day, and they won’t let you forget the treat when they get it right.
TEACH THEM TO BOW
From a stand/stay position, support the hip area to keep it up and gently lure the front of the dog into a down position for a few seconds. Then release the dog back into a standing position. Do this 3 or 4 times and be sure to say BOW when they are in the bow position, rewarding them with another treat. Choose a time when they are wanting attention from you, they always want to please and not just for the doggie dippers.
IS THAT A ZOMBIE? (Hide your eyes)
Once your dog is sitting, gently lift a paw with your hand and raise it above his nose. Offer a treat and giving him plenty of praise encourage him to follow the treat. Bring the paw over the nose and offer the treat from underneath his paw. Say HIDE everytime you try it, and be lavish with your praise and with his favourite Nibbly Bitz
PLAY DEAD
Place your dog in the DOWN position and holding a front paw, gently roll him onto opposite side, using the command FLAT and a hand gesture. Repeat as often as you can, giving him loads of praise and a treat every time. You’ll be surprised how quickly he’ll roll over all by himself whenever he hears the FLAT command, when he knows there’s a tasty peanut treat waiting.
Your dog will love being part of the fun as you show his new tricks to the family, but the best part is that we’re looking after your pet at the same time. You can give him as many treats as you like, secure in the knowledge that they’re specially made here at the Happy Mutt Company from the finest vegan ingredients.
